Microbial Communities Present in Hydrothermal Sediments from Deception Island, Antarctica

چکیده
Deception Island is a geothermal location in Antarctica that presents active fumaroles, which confers unique characteristics to this habitat. Several studies about microbial communities have been carried out, nevertheless, Antarctic microbiota still partially unknown. Here we present multidisciplinary study sediments obtained by deposition during 4 years several approaches considered for their characterization. First, physicochemical characterization, using ionic chromatography and mass spectrometry the determination of most abundant ions (chloride sulphate) elements (mainly silicon), was conducted. In addition, total community studied metataxonomical approach, revealing bacterial dominated Proteobacteria Thaumarchaeota as main archaeal genera fungal mainly composed Aspergillaceae. Culture-dependent showed low diversity, only achieving isolation Bacillus-related species, some them thermophilic, common fungi Aspergillus or Penicillium spp. Furthermore, diatoms were detected sediment characterized attending morphological scanning electron microscopy. The reveals high influence conditions populations distribution, offering valuable data on interaction between island water microbiota.

Microbial diversity of hydrothermal sediments in the Guaymas Basin: evidence for anaerobic methanotrophic communities.
Microbial communities in hydrothermally active sediments of the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California, Mexico) were studied by using 16S rRNA sequencing and carbon isotopic analysis of archaeal and bacterial lipids. The Guaymas sediments harbored uncultured euryarchaeota of two distinct phylogenetic lineages within the anaerobic methane oxidation 1 (ANME-1) group, ANME-1a and ANME-1b, and of the AN...
متن کاملMicrobial Communities in Methane- and Short Chain Alkane-Rich Hydrothermal Sediments of Guaymas Basin
The hydrothermal sediments of Guaymas Basin, an active spreading center in the Gulf of California (Mexico), are rich in porewater methane, short-chain alkanes, sulfate and sulfide, and provide a model system to explore habitat preferences of microorganisms, including sulfate-dependent, methane- and short chain alkane-oxidizing microbial communities. In this study, hot sediments (above 60°C) cov...
متن کاملChitinase genes in lake sediments of Ardley Island, Antarctica.
A sediment core spanning approximately 1,600 years was collected from a lake on Ardley Island, Antarctica. The sediment core had been greatly influenced by penguin guano. Using molecular methods, the chitinolytic bacterial community along the sediment core was studied over its entire length. Primers targeting conserved sequences of the catalytic domains of family 18 subgroup A chitinases detect...
متن کاملMicrobial communities in streambed sediments recovering from desiccation.
Climate change affects running waters not only by increasing temperatures but also by increasing discharge variability as more frequent and severe floods and more frequent and longer droughts occur, especially in upper reaches. Mediterranean streams are known to experience droughts, but Central European headwaters are also beginning to be affected. The development of bacterial communities (abun...
متن کاملDatabase of multi-parametric geophysical data from the TOMO-DEC experiment on Deception Island, Antarctica
Deception Island volcano (Antarctica) is one of the most closely monitored and studied volcanoes on the region. In January 2005, a multi-parametric international experiment was conducted that encompassed both Deception Island and its surrounding waters. We performed this experiment from aboard the Spanish oceanographic vessel 'Hespérides', and from five land-based locations on Deception Island ...
